What are the prospects for a movie like The Expendables 2 this summer? Much like when The Expendables crashed theaters against Eat Pray Love in 2010, the machismo-laden sequel is facing threats of counter programming in its opening weekend. Many will flock to the upcoming Sparkle remake, if only to witness the late Whitney Houston's final performance. The animated horror, ParaNorman, may have the best shot at success, but the marketing has been muted to say the least. Robert Pattinson and David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis may draw a few people curious to see how such a strange pairing might play out. In other words, the biggest competition The Expendables 2 may face is the expected summer long dominance of The Dark Knight Rises. Will Sylvester Stallone and his team of aging heroes be the ones to knock Batman from off his perch?
The latest clip from The Expendables 2 shows exactly why people remain excited for it, despite the first film's lukewarm reception. It's a lethal mix of bad jokes, stale one-liners, bullets and explosions made all the better by the undeniable presence of Stallone and Jason Statham. The Expendables proved to be less fun than it should've been, so Stallone and director Simon West seem to be aiming hard for a campier tone, as seen here when Stallone makes a fool of himself just before being saved by Liam Hemsworth(The Hunger Games) of all people.
