Before Emma Watson laughs her way through The End of the World, she'll turn up in a much more sobering dramatic film, The Perks of Being A Wallflower. Written and directed by the novel's author, Stephen Chbosky, the story centers on a shy, introverted teenager named Charlie, who must struggle with life and the first year of high school alone after the suicide of his best friend. The novel was praised, and was also fairly controversial, for its handling of drugs, suicide, and sexual confusion.
Chbosky's novel unfolds in a rather unique, epistolary way, as Charlie writes a series of letters about his troubled life to an anonymous recipient he doesn't even know but heard was a good person. Logan Lerman(The Three Musketeers) stars as Charlie, with Watson as Sam, a pretty high school senior he becomes close friends with. Ezra Miller(We Need to Talk About Kevin) plays her step-brother, Patrick, with the two guiding Charlie in his attempts to try new things, like dating and drug use. Paul Rudd turns up as Charlie's teacher, who encourages him to read a very specific bunch of books. Mae Whitman, Dylan McDermott, Kate Walsh, Johnny Simmons, and Nina Dobrev co-star.
Chbosky's novel was published by MTV Books, so it only makes sense that they'd be the first to bust out a brief glimpse at the upcoming trailer, which will premier during the MTV Movie Awards. The newly released poster is simple, but shows off the fresh young cast, and puts Watson front and center. The film hits theaters on September 14th, and hopefully I'll have read it by then.
