Disney may be developing sequel to 1993's 'Hocus Pocus'

Disney has never quite let us forget their 1993 goofy witch comedy, Hocus Pocus. It's on all the time on the Disney Channel, especially around Halloween, and for some odd reason the film has attained a measure of cult status amongst people my age. I remember hating it back in the day, mainly because it starred three actresses who were(and still are) like cinematic poison to me: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Nijimy, and Bette Midler. Ugh. They played a trio of evil sister witches from Salem, MA who are resurrected in current times on Halloween night. The film was directed by Kenny Ortega(High School Musical), and if Moviehole is to be believed, a sequel is quietly in development.

It's unclear if Ortega would be involved with the sequel, which may be titled Hocus Pocus 2: Rise of the Elderwitch. That doesn't tell us much in regards to the cast, but it's expected to center on an entirely new group of characters and a totally different situation. Vinessa Shaw(Two Lovers) and Thora Birch(Ghost World) were a part of the young cast, and since they've both grown to be actresses I admire quite a bit, it'd be awesome if they could come back. Even Doug Jones(Hellboy) had a supporting role as the zombie, Billy Butcherson. Everyone else can take a hike, far as I'm concerned.

This is still very early on in development, and may not even happen. So we'll just have to wait and see what comes of it. It sorta sounds ripe to be merely a Disney Channel film, which means we won't ever see it in theaters, and it wouldn't feature any stars most of us care about.
