Will Smith's Biblical vampire film gets a green light at Sony

Always a trendsetter, Will Smith was a good five minutes ahead of the Hollywood curve by planning his own Biblical epic, based on the tale of murderous sibling rival, Cain and Abel. Only his version, which at the time was titled The Legend of Cain, was different in that it had a vampire element thrown in as well, which I'm sure has to be sacrilege in some way, right?  Smith's Overbrook Entertainment was set to produce the film, with the former Fresh Prince in line to take one of the two lead roles. But this summer we started to hear about the possibility of Smith stepping behind the camera for his directorial debut, now possibly titled The Redemption of Cain, and while it's unclear if that is still the case, we can confirm the project has been given the thumbs up by Sony with production to begin next summer.

Heathen though I may be according to my buddy Tim Gordon, enough time in Sunday School was spent that I know the story of Cain and Abel pretty well. They were the first children born to Adam and Eve, with one becoming a shepard and the other a farmer. Cain grew jealous of Abel when God shows preference to his brother's sacrifice. Cain would then lead Abel out into the forest and kill him. God then branded the murderer with the infamous "mark of Cain", and banished him to wander the earth.

It's likely that some tinkering to Caleeb Smith's script has taken place over the last two years, and I'll bet a part of that is bulking up the vampire elements to reflect their seemingly unstoppable popularity. It seems like a weird project for Smith to make his directorial debut on, and trying to pull double-duty as the star could prove a bit overwhelming. So let's just wait and see if all of that still comes to pass. Either way, Smith's name all but assures that The Redemption of Cain will be the Bible-thumping flick with the most eyes on it. [TheWrap]
