Guillermo Del Toro and Travis Beacham to co-write 'Pacific Rim' sequel

The extensive viral campaign for Pacific Rim might have you thinking it'll be in your theater in just a few days, but we're actually still eight months away. Still, that hasn't stopped early word regarding a sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's big budget monster spectacle, and now today we know it's officially moving forward.

THR reports that Pacific Rim scribe Travis Beacham has been brought back to pen the script, with Del Toro on board to co-write. Del Toro will supervise, but isn't locked to direct at this point. We've known for awhile that he wants to do other things first, and just yesterday we learned his next project will be the ghost story Crimson Peak. That doesn't begin production until early 2014, so if Del Toro does agree to direct we could be waiting awhile. I wouldn't be surprised if someone else takes over so that Legendary Pictures can capitalize on the success, assuming it's a hit.

We'll find out if Pacific Rim warrants a sequel when it opens on July 12th 2013.
