Hit the breaks! Producers say no 'Texas Chainsaw' sequel yet
Sorry, Texas Chainsaw 3D fans, all that recent talk of a sequel was a lot of hot air. At least that's the gist of the news revealed by Deadline, who broke story yesterday of a sequel, confusingly titled Texas Chainsaw 4. According to Comingsoon, that title was just a typo on Deadline's part. Anyway, Millennium Films' Avi Lerner is the one who jumped the gun and made the announcement, when in fact follow-ups have not been green lit.
Producers Carl Mazzacone and Mark Burg hold the Texas Chainsaw rights, and according to them the final decision on sequel is there's to make. Mazzacone says nothing will happen to all of the creative elements have been put in place, while Burg went on to say this...
Burg: “The rights are controlled by Carl and Main Line Pictures, no matter what Millennium says. Millennium simply sold the foreign rights and they will not tell us when a sequel is ready to be made. The script was developed by Carl, myself and writer/director John Luessenhop. Millennium and about ten producers came aboard only when we needed their check. Maybe they’re looking for something to sell at Berlin, but they have no right to announce this sequel and if we make another it has to be as good or better than this one and that takes time.”
A Millennium rep responded by basically accusing others of trying to take credit for the film's success, which he then followed by trying to take credit for the film's success...
“I understand all this wrestling about credit, but you show me a producer who’ll turn down the cash they need to do a sequel, and I will fall off my chair. Without us, that movie would not have gotten made.”
Texas Chainsaw 3D surprised many with a $21M opening weekend, strong numbers that all but guarantee a sequel. Supposedly the contract allows for as many as six more to be made. So the bottom line of all this is that we WILL see a sequel once everybody quiets down long enough to start talking money.
