Yeah, you read that headline right. As rumors continue to swirl over who Disney will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the simple truth is that there will be plenty of irons in the fire before too long. We already know planning is in the works for the next two chapters, talk of spinoffs already under way, and even some loose talk of the Star Wars TV series has kicked up again. Nobody could have expected Disney to move quite this fast, though, or go in this particular direction.
Vulture reports that Zack Snyder is prepping a Star Wars film set outside of the next trilogy, but in the same universe. Obviously, details are slim at this point, but it's said to be influenced by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, taking place sometime between Return of the Jedi and the start of the next film. Kurosawa's films have always been seen as a heavy influence on George Lucas' sci-fi epic, so this makes sense to take it one step further.
It's unclear if Snyder is directing, although that would certainly seem to be the case. Last November, Snyder said this when asked about taking over Episode VII....
Zack Snyder: “I don’t think I’d be interested in [directing it]. I’m a huge ‘Star Wars’ fanatic. I just think doing [episodes] seven, eight and nine is just a slippery slope. It’s a whole other mythological experiment I’m excited to see, but it’s a lot of effort.”
It's totally possible he was telling the truth back then. Or more likely he was just being extremely clever with his words, since he's not actually. So, what do you think? Interested in a Zack Snyder Star Wars movie? And doesn't this give you a little more confidence that Man of Steel is something great? Disney wouldn't offer him something like this if buzz was negative.
