In case you haven't noticed, novels based on Twilight fan-fic are like so hot right now! Of course there's Fifty Shades of Grey, which has every unfulfilled housewife quivering with anticipation over who will be play Christian Grey in the movie. Frankly, it seems like writers are coming out of the woodwork and labeling all of their sleazy, tawdry stories as being based on the hit vampire romance, because it all but guarantees a movie deal.
The latest to take advantage of the Twi-craze are Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings (known collectively as Christina Lauren), who have now sold the film rights to their book Beautiful Bastard. Constantin Film will develop the project, which centers on MBA student Chloe Mills who enters into a torrid sexual affair with her cold, handsome boss Bennett Ryan. How is this different than Fifty Shades of Grey? I guess it would explore gender dynamics in the workplace, not that anybody really cares about all that. It's really just about hot people gettin' down 'n dirty, right? And living vicariously through them or something?
Beautiful Bastard first hit online a few years ago as Twilight fan-fic 'The Office', before landing on store shelves just yesterday. It's already had more than 2 million downloads, which means you husbands out there really need to step your game up! A sequel, titled Beautiful Stranger, is due out later this year so there's obvious franchise potential.
I find this trend pretty disturbing and rather pathetic, but there's obviously some money to be made in this junk. [THR]
