Saoirse Ronan is of two minds in new trailer for 'The Host'
There's really no good way to try and simplify the confusing mess of a plot behind Stephenie Meyer's The Host, but the latest trailer probably does as good a job as can be expected. Certainly it's one that aims to highlight the action and sci-fi elements more than the tragic teen love story at the heart of it, figuring it might be wise to try and attract more than just 15-year old girls.
That's also why there's a greater emphasis on Diane Kruger and William Hurt's characters, along with the slick world created by writer/director Andrew Niccol. Clearly in his element after glossy futuristic films like Gattaca and In Time, Niccol at least gives the film a stylish appearance. Saoirse Ronan takes on the dual roles of human Melanie Stryder and alien "soul" Wanderer, the latter having taken over Melanie's body while struggling to claim her mind. Melanie sets off to discover her long-lost lover, finding the last pocket of human resistance in the process. Meanwhile Wanderer falls in love with another member of the group. So yeah, basically you've got two guys (Max Irons and Jake Abel) sucking face with a girl who is literally of two minds.
Keep up with all of that? Believe me, it gets even more strange. The Host comes to claim your soul on March 29th....
