Christian Bale May Reunite with Todd Haynes for 'Act of God'
Todd Haynes has only made five movies in his distinguished career, and he's shown a propensity for sticking with the people who have helped carry him this far. Julianne Moore starred in his breakout film Safe before returning for the Douglas Sirk-era drama Far From Heaven. And as Haynes began to tackle films with a more musical flavor, such as the glam rock Velvet Goldmine and the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There, he turned to Christian Bale to anchor them. Now as Haynes ventures back into feature films after directing the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce, he's approaching Bale again, but for something that's a little bit different.
According to The Tracking Board, Bale has been offered the lead in Act of God, a political drama he's been talking up for a couple of years. Dealing in some way with conservative politics and the plight of the American midwest, the film centers on “a Kansas man who speaks out against local government after a devastating tornado, becoming a national figure in the process.” Sounds like Haynes may be exploring questions posed in What's the Matter with Kansas?, although he's promised in the past that the film will be completely unbiased.
Haynes is also developing an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's Carol, which has Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska on board, but we haven't heard much about it lately and Act of God may be next on his schedule.
