Marvel Developing Captain America TV Spinoff 'Agent Carter'

Marvel have found tremendous success with their One-Shot series of shorts, all of which turned up on the Blu-Ray editions of their major features. Basically serving as a bridge between their theatrical films, they've also helped spark other projects that expand the universe. Last year's Item 47, which followed SHIELD agents dealing with the repercussions of The Avengers, helped spark the Agents of SHIELD TV series debuting next week. Now it looks like Marvel is taking another One-Shot and using it as the basis for a second network series, only this one would be focused on a single fan-favorite character.

Deadline reports that Marvel is developing a series centered inspired by Agent Carter, the short film starring Hayley Atwell as Captain America's former flame, Peggy Carter. Atwell first portrayed her in Captain America: The First Avenger, and it was fan outcry that led to the Agent Carter One-Shot, which follows her as she joins the newly-created SHIELD and takes on her first mission. The series, which is still seeking a writer, would take on a similar path and focus on her "as a budding secret agent after her boyfriend is stranded in ice."

Joss Whedon oversees all of Marvel's projects and he's been talking for months about the need to create more content geared towards women, so this would seem to be right in his wheelhouse. There's no mention of his involvement, however, nor anything about Atwell. She's worked in TV on various miniseries before, so it wouldn't be a stretch to see her reprising the role. She'll appear briefly as Carter in next year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Nothing is confirmed as of yet, but it looks like Marvel is expanding their influence even further. How long before ABC just has an entire night of programming dedicated to Marvel superheroes? Agent Carter will be part of the Iron Man 3 Blu-Ray on September 24th.
