First Trailer for Ridley Scott's 'Exodus: Gods and Kings' Starring Christian Bale

There's been a great deal of controversy over Bible-themed movies taking liberties with the original text. Even before Darren Aronofsky had released a single frame of Noah there were religious groups lining up in protest over what they figured would be some liberal Hollywood version of the story, and...well, it did kind of look like a Biblical superhero movie. And there's a pretty good chance Ridley Scott will face many of the same criticisms for Exodus: Gods and Kings, which the first trailer boasts is from "the director of Gladiator" for a pretty good reason.

Starring Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton, garishly done up in heavy doses of make-up to make them look less like Bruce Wayne and Tom Buchanan (it doesn't quite work), the film tells the story of Moses and how he stood up to Ramses in leading the Israelites out of Egypt. It's easy to see where the budget went on this one as it's quite the impressive spectacle, although there's also something kind of corny about the whole thing. This appears to be Scott doing an action movie and simply plopping it into an ancient era, so yeah, from "the director of Gladiator". Am I wrong in catching the whiff of Alexander all over this one?

Also starring Ben Kingsley, John Turturro, Sigourney Weaver, and Aaron Paul, Exodus: Gods and Kings opens December 12th.
