The 'Blue Thunder' You Love is Being Replaced by a Drone
I guess this was inevitable. Y'know, I can accept that drone technology has completely changed our military. It's even okay that a plethora of movies have begun to explore some of the ethical questions surrounding their use. But when drones begin affecting one of my childhood favorites like Blue Thunder, then we got problems.
Sony Pictures is developing a remake of Blue Thunder, which hit theaters in 1983 and starred Roy Schneider as the pilot of one sick, high-tech helicopter. Did I have the Blue Thunder replica as a child? You bet I did. Also had the entire TV series recorded on VHS. Anyway, Sony's plan is to update it to focus on drone technology. Comic book scribe and Thor: Ragnarok writer Craig Kyle will pen the screenplay.
The good news is that Kyle is using the original film as a basis for his modern take, but it will undoubtedly lose something in the translation. There's something about that bond between a machine and the cockpit pilot that simply won't be there with drones. In fact, we've seen multiple films explore that disconnect already. We'll see how this goes but I'm not optimistic. [THR]
