'Suicide Squad' Enlists Common for a Mystery Role

It's been left to the dust bins of history now but there was a time when Oscar-winning rapper/actor Common was going to be Green Lantern. Or darn close to it, anyway, back when George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) was developing a Justice League film. It never happened, obviously, but Common has found a way into the DC Universe anyway as part of Suicide Squad.

Common has landed a mystery role in the David Ayer-directed film, which is going to be a huge part of Warner Bros.' superhero plans going forward. It pretty much has to be with a superstar cast consisting of Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne, Scott Eastwood, Jay Hernandez, Ike Barinholtz, Adewale Akkinuoye-Agbabe, and more. Most of them are playing villains forced to work as expendable assets for a secret government organization.

Let the speculation begin on Common's role. The usual rules apply, though. A studio wouldn't sign someone of his level unless it was to play a major character. And Common just finished playing a lethal mercenary in Run All Night (opposite Kinnaman), so he's properly warmed up. Suicide Squad opens August 5th 2016. [THR]
