First Clip from Gus Van Sant's 'Sea of Trees' Starring Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe
The main hurdle faced by any film dealing with suicide is how to avoid being so gloomy nobody wants to see it. Certainly, adding a cast led by Matthew McConaughey, Ken Watanabe, and Naomi Watts is a good place to start for Gus Van Sant's Cannes-bound drama, Sea of Trees, which has just been picked up by Lionsgate and released its first clip.
Oscar-winner McConaughey plays Arthur Brennan, a suicidal man who heads to Japan's Aokigahara forest, also known as the "Suicide Forest", to kill himself. Before he can commit the act, he encounters a Japanese man (Watanabe) who is in a similar situation. Together, they contemplate life and death, the choices they've made, and the choices yet to come while looking for a pathway out.
No word on when Lionsgate, who are partnering up with Roadside Attractions, will release the film but don't be surprised if it's close to awards season.
