'Goon' Sequel to be Jay Baruchel's Directorial Debut

Jay Baruchel's hockey comedy Goon has become a cult favorite (I didn't really dig it), compared favorably with its fans to a classic like Slap Shot. There has been a steady buzz for more of Seann William Scott's lunk-headed hockey goon ever since, and while Baruchel has insisted a sequel was coming, actual movement on it has been slippery at best. But now THR reports Baruchel is finally getting the puck moving by directing the sequel himself.

Baruchel will make his directorial debut on Goon: Last of the Enforcers, co-writing the screenplay with his writing partner Jesse Chabot. Michael Dowse directed the first film and was briefly on board to return, but obviously those plans fell through the ice. Of course, you can't have a Goon film without Seann William Scott as Doug "The Thug" Glatt, and he's coming back in a story that "sees his team, the Halifax Highlanders, reunite with a host of new players during a pro lockout." So this is like The Replacements on ice? Baruchel will also play Doug's best friend Pat from the first film. Nothing on if Alison Pill will return as Doug's athlete-obsessed girlfriend, Eva.

Filming begins in June. Barcuchel can seen on the FXX comedy series, Man Seeking Woman, and has a small role in Cameron Crowe's rom-com, Aloha.
