That Stephen Gaghan's mining scandal drama is titled Gold is ironic since the cast he's putting together could win some gold next year. The real-life story already boasts Matthew McConaughey and Edgar Ramirez, and now Oscar nominee Michelle Williams is ready to grab a shovel and join them.
Written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman, Gold is loosely based on the 1997 Bre-X Mineral Corporation fraud scandal involving the supposed discovery of large amounts of gold in the Indonesian Jungle. This has been a hot project around Hollywood for awhile, previously attracting the attention of Michael Mann and Spike Lee. Williams will play McConaughey's wife, and hopefully it's a big enough role to put the full range of her talents to good use.
Filming is set to begin in June. Williams still has Suite Francais opposite Matthias Schoenaerts coming up later this year hopefully (the UK got it in March), plus she's finished shooting on Kelly Reichardt's upcoming drama, and Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester-By-The-Sea. [Variety]
