Silence is Deafening in the New Trailer for 'The Tribe'

Winning awards at last year's Cannes, then performing well at Sundance and again here at Filmfest DC, Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy's ambitious drama The Tribe is due for a release this summer. And with Cannes kicking off today, Drafthouse Films have decided it's a good time to debut the latest trailer for the dialogue-free film.

That there's no dialogue shouldn't be a problem, right? Because of subtitles? Well, there aren't any of those, either, as the film is set at a school for the deaf where sign language is the only form of communication. It's there that we encounter a young man who tries to fit into the school's mafia-like hierarchy.

While some of the reviews have praised the narrative conceit for emphasizing cinema as a visual medium, just as many reviews have slammed it for keeping audiences disconnected. All of us missed it at Sundance and at Filmfest (*grumble*), but we'll make up for it when The Tribe opens June 17th.
