A Remake of 'Sister Act' is in the Works over at Disney

The only thing surprising, and I mean the ONLY thing that's surprising, is that Disney waited so long to remake Sister Act. That's the story being reported by THR, that screenwriters Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah (Legally Blonde, The House Bunny) have been hired to draft a "new installment" of the hit Whoopi Goldberg musical comedy from 1992.

There's a bit of confusion as to what this film will actually be. The report calls it a remake but the words "new installment" suggest a sequel or continuation of some kind. Sister Act: The New Generation, maybe? The original film starred Goldberg as Reno lounge singer who is targeted by a mob boss (uggghhh) and is forced to hide in a convent (uggghh) under the custody of a bunch of nuns, and of course she has to pose as one, too (urrgghh). She passes the time by joining their lowly group choir and turning them into singing superstars.

Sister Act was a smash $231M success, leading to an unfortunate sequel the following year, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, which grossed $160M. In 2006 the film was adapted for the stage and broke box office records, earning five Tony Award nominations in the process. So there's a lot of love out there for Sister Act, but it would be impossible to think of a new movie without Goldberg being part of it.  What I do know is that my grandmother is going to flip out over this news. Nobody messes with her Sister Act, do you hear me?
