“Jackie & Ryan is about musicians struggling to find their voice in their lives, both literally and metaphorically. What drew me to tell this story is that I wanted to platform folks who strive to be excellent craftspeople simply for the sake of being excellent craftspeople, rather than for money or publicity. I have a tremendous amount of respect for that work ethic."
That was director Ami Canaan Mann (Texas Killing Fields) talking to EW about her new film, Jackie & Ryan, and it sounds a lot like Begin Again or Once or numerous other movies about talented artists. That is until you look at the trailer and see that it's a romance set in the world of country music, and starring the always-divisive Katherine Heigl.
Heigl plays Jackie, a former singing sensation trying to put her life back together. Her soon-to-be ex-husband wants her to stop divorce proceedings and move to Manhattan, or he'll file for full custody of their daughter. Good thing she stopped to listen to the handsome busker, Ryan (Ben Barnes), who helps provide her with new hope...and of course some good lovin'.
There's an audience out there for this...somewhere. It just isn't me. Jackie & Ryan opens July 3rd.
