Han Solo Spinoff Confirmed with Phil Lord and Chris Miller Directing
If Disney and Lucasfilm were looking for a way to attract even more attention to their Star Wars franchise, luring fan-favorite directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller is a good way to go. The duo who made gold out of The Lego Movie, two 21 Jump Street movies, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will direct the long-rumored Han Solo spinoff movie, but it comes with a bit of bad news that could disappoint their fans.
According to THR, Lord and Miller will direct the "Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Anthology Film" with a release date set for Memorial Day 2018. The film takes the place of the Boba Fett movie that was initially to be directed by Josh Trank for a 2018 release. Lawrence and Jon Kasdan will be co-writing the screenplay and the early synopsis has already been revealed, even though it's pretty basic:
The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.
The downside is that a project of this scope is going to cause the directors to leave some other projects. It appears that Flash film they were attached to is now off, while they be forced to reduce their part in a third 'Jump Street' movie. The animated Spider-Man project they were working on should remain, as well as their involvement with future Lego movies.
So let the speculation on who will play Han Solo begin. Aaron Paul was rumored for it some months ago, but you can bet Lucasfilm has a number of candidates in mind.
