New Posters for 'Carol', 'Brooklyn', 'Macbeth', and 'Leatherface'

The poster for Todd Haynes' Oscar hopeful, Carol, has been released featuring its two stars, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. The film is based on Patricia Highsmith's novel set in the 1950s and centering on the relationship that forms between a married woman and a young shop girl. Carol opens in theaters on November 20th. SYNOPSIS: In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt, CAROL follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) come to light. Carol is directed by Todd Haynes and written by Phyllis Nagy with moving performances from Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Cory Michael Smith.

Another film with high awards expectations is Brooklyn, John Crowley's immigrant drama starring Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Julie Walters, Domhnall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent, and Arrow's Emily Bett Rickards. This is a film I saw at Sundance and fully expect to see Ronan get nominated for her striking performance, and perhaps even a nod for what is a rich, satisfying screenplay. Brooklyn opens November 6th. SYNOPSIS: BROOKLYN tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

For reasons unknown to anyone but Harvey Weinstein, Justin Kurzel's Macbeth won't be part of the awards race or the fall festival run, despite it having all the talent necessary to be a factor. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star in the Shakespearean adaptation for their Assassins Creed director, Justin Kurzel, and everything released to this point suggests a more visceral take on the Bard than the big screen has ever seen. Macbeth hits theaters on December 4th. SYNOPSIS: From the producers of THE KING’S SPEECH comes the feature film adaptation of Shakespeare’s play MACBETH about Scottish General Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) whose ambitious wife (Marion Cotillard) urges him to use wicked means in order to gain power of the throne over the sitting king.

There have been two Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboots and one quasi-sequel in twelve years but so what? What's one more? Leatherface reveals the origin of the masked killer, only this time he's a psychotic teenager who escapes from a mental ward with a few inmates and kidnaps a nurse. Sam Strike (Eastenders) plays Leatherface, while Stephen Dorff and Lili Taylor are really the only other recognizable names. Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury are directing for release some time in 2016.
