Bryan Singer Talks 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Runtime; New Synopsis Revealed

It's only fitting that the X-Men franchise undergo an evolution, and next year's X-Men: Apocalypse is where that all begins. Bryan Singer couldn't have chosen a better villain to wrap up the series than En Sabah Nur aka Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) because he's against everything the X-Men stand for. He also serves as the ultimate extension of where Magneto's (Michael Fassbender) ideology of mutant superiority can lead. So it makes sense for the film to have more of an epic feel than the prior chapters, and that includes a lengthier run time.

While attending the San Pedro International Film Festival (Too many film festivals, you say? I agree.), Singer revealed that X-Men: Apocalypse runs a bit longer than the others, but it's for a good cause.

“The cut’s a little long right now, but I think it’s going to be a longer X-Men movie. The X-Men movies I usually I keep under two hours, but this one I may actually let be a longer movie because it’s sort of a wrap-up of six movies. It’s kind of a wrap up of X-Men 1, 2, 3, First Class, Days of Future Past, and there’s even an homage at the end, a scene. Its going to get spoiled because they decided to use it in the trailer which comes out in like six months, but it’s a really cool trailer. But it’s kind of a wrap up of six movies. So, it might run a little bit long.”

For the record, X-Men: Days of Future Past was NOT under two hours, not by a long shot. Anyway, it makes sense for this one to be longer because there are a lot of loose ends to tie-up, and fans will be expecting some kind of coda that brings everything together.

Meanwhile, a new, full synopsis for the film has been revealed thanks to a partnership between 20th Century Fox and M&Ms candy. Seriously.

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

We already know that Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy), and Psylocke (Olivia Munn) will be fighting on Apocalypse's side in the beginning, but it sounds as if Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) will be thrown into the fight, as well.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens May 27th 2016.
