With more than $400M worldwide, 20th Century Fox's spy flick Kingsman: The Secret Service is one of the year's biggest surprises. What wasn't surprising is how quickly there was talk of a sequel, despite star Taron Egerton becoming a very busy rising young star. It took a little while to get Egerton's schedule all sorted out, but now Kingsman 2 has a release date and it isn't too far away.
Fox has set the sequel for June 6th 2017, putting it right in the middle of summer blockbuster season, a risky gamble to say the least. One of the reasons the first film did so well was the relatively easy competition it faced in February, but now it will have to compete with the likes of Cars 3, World War Z 2, and Wonder Woman opening around the same time.
Matthew Vaughn is writing the screenplay but so far he has not committed to directing, nor is there any confirmation of Colin Firth's return. While the fate of his character would make a comeback unlikely, all involved have expressed a desire for him to return somehow.
