Matthew McConaughey Offered Lead in Russo Brothers' Crime Thriller 'Ciudad'

The Russo Brothers have quickly become a brand unto themselves after spear-heading Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They recently wrapped on the third Cap film, 'Civil War', and will get rolling on the two-part Avengers: Infinity War at some point. But they have careers that stretch beyond just Marvel and beyond feature films. A few years ago they were looking to adapt their graphic novel, Ciudad, with Dwayne Johnson in the lead role. That never came to be, but the Russos have apparently found the project a new home at Sony, where they are starting to build a large presence.

According to The Tracking Board, Sony Pictures has picked up the rights to Ciudad and they want Matthew McConaughey to star. This furthers the relationship the studio has with the Russos who have a Ghostbusters film developing, plus spy thriller The Gray Man starring Charlize Theron

Ciudad takes place in the dangerous and corrupt city of Ciudad del Este, and follows mercenary Tyler Rake who is hired to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Brazilian drug lord. As of now the film doesn't have a director, although John Pogue (The Quiet Ones) had been previously attached. Landing someone like McConaughey would give the film an extra boost but at this point there's no indication he'll accept Sony's offer.
