James Gunn Responds To 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2' Rumors About Star-Lord's Father

It's always a difficult balance trying to blog about rumors and news stories without spoiling too much. It gets even harder when those stories deal with Marvel movies because everyone wants to know what's up with them? Who is this person playing? Where is this plot going? We often say we don't want anything spoiled, and yet those posts tend to be the most read of the day. One of the cool things about Punch Drunk Critics being a simple little blog without any kind of editorial mandates is that I can choose to just ignore shit if I want to. Trust me, there's a lot more we don't post than we do. But some other sites basically justify their existence by posting "scoops", and one of those is Heroic Hollywood which released a video today revealing Star-Lord's father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

You can watch that video for yourself if you want. I'm not posting it here, and frankly it's not that wild of a guess. And it probably doesn't matter because writer/director James Gunn has already come out and denied it to be true. But he then went on to question the entire "scooping" industry, whose goal it seems is to just ruin the moviegoing experience as a whole.

All right. From this moment on I’m going to stop commenting on any rumors surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,...

It's tough to argue with him, especially that last point. But his first point, that these stories tend to be full of shit, holds some weight, too. Every now and then somebody gets a major scoop right, but just as often they turn out to be made up out of whole cloth.  I've often speculated that sites just make shit up and post anything that sounds remotely plausible because it will attract readers. If I posted tomorrow that Star-Lord's father is really Thanos it would get tons of clicks, even though I made it up totally.

Anyway, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 remains under wraps, as it should be since it doesn't open until May 5th 2017.
