One thing I'm not going to do is go down the rabbit hole of following every group's awards announcements. That's an endless amount of work that I'm not prepared to handle. But in the case of the ultra mysterious National Board of Review, their award winners are genuinely interesting this year as they've made an unexpected choice for Best Film. Oh what a lovely day it is!
George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road was awarded Best Film by the group, continuing their trend of bucking the...well, trends. There's no doubt the balls-out insane chase flick is high on many critics' lists and has some of the year's best reviews, but few actually have the nuts to award an action flick such a high honor. Perhaps this will open the door for more to do the same? Another big winner was Ridley Scott's The Martian, which earned him Best Director, Best Actor for star Matt Damon, and Best Screenplay. Could it be this year's Gravity? I certainly think so. And Brie Larson, a heavy favorite for an Oscar nomination, won Best Actress for Room.
