Christian Bale Rejoins Scott Cooper for 'Hostiles'

There's a vacancy in Christian Bale's always-tight schedule, created by his unwillingness to pack on the pounds for Michael Mann's Enzo Ferrari biopic. There hadn't been much word on what he would do to fill the time, but now we know he'll be rejoining his Out of the Furnace director Scott Cooper on his next film.

Bale and Cooper will reteam for Hostiles, a western based on a reimagining of a screenplay by late screnenwriter Donald Stewart (Clear and Present Danger). Here's the synopsis:

Set in 1892, Hostiles tells the story of a legendary Army captain, who after stern resistance, begrudgingly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to tribal lands. Making the harrowing and perilous journey from an isolated Army outpost in New Mexico to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape and hostile Comanche tribes that they encounter along the way.

This will be next up for Bale, and hopefully this pans out better than Out of the Furnace, which vanished pretty quickly despite a starry cast. [Deadline]
