The first time we heard about the Russo Brothers' potential male-led Ghostbusters film was as part of the Sony email leak, which could explain why it's never quite felt legit. The potential was certainly there for something cool, with Channing Tatum and possibly Chris Pratt working alongside the Captain America: Civil War directors. But with Sony developing Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot as part of a potential cinematic universe, it never seemed to have anybody's full attention. And now none of it matters because the film isn't happening, anyway.
Speaking with Forbes, Joe Russo said the Ghostbusters project is totally off the table, at least for them...
“There is no status with that for us. There was a period there when Paul Feig was engaging Sony in talks about ‘Ghostbusters’ and we were also engaging them. He was further along with his process than we were and he closed his deal so that’s the only ‘Ghostbusters’ world that’s being explored right now over at Sony. Once we took ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ it [took] us off the table for any kind of any potential work on a ‘Ghostbusters’ project.”
What's interesting about that is he suggests his film was being considered at the same time as Feig's, but Sony went with the all-girl movie instead. That's not how it appeared to play out in those emails, but that's the problem with reading too much into correspondence we weren't meant to see in the first place. And honestly, this isn't much of a shock. All last year there were conflicting reports, with one saying the movie was dead, and another just weeks later suggesting otherwise. Producer Ivan Reitman came right out and said there weren't going to be other spinoffs, and clearly he wasn't joking. Well, except for that animated movie which is still very much in the works.
