Sofia Coppola Plans 'The Beguiled' Remake With Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman, And Elle Fanning

Last summer the incredibly exciting rumor surfaced that Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst, who have worked together on The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, and The Bling Ring, were looking to collaborate again this year. There have been a smattering of rumblings about that over the last few weeks, but now The Tracking Board is reporting that not only is the project a very real thing, but Dunst will have some impressive co-stars.

The site says Coppola will write and direct a remake of The Beguiled, a 1971 film that starred Clint Eastwood as an injured Union soldier taken to a Confederate all girl boarding school where he takes advantage of the sexually repressed atmosphere to charm his way into their hearts.  The film was an adaptation of the southern Gothic novel by Thomas P. Cullinan. Joining Dunst would be Elle Fanning, who starred in Somewhere for Coppola a few years ago, and Nicole Kidman in her first gig with the director. A Chris Pratt-type is being sought to fill the role originally played by Eastwood.

If this pans out it could be pretty incredible, and now that other sources are chiming in this might be legit. Coppola hasn't directed a film since The Bling Ring and her last feature, a live-action The Little Mermaid, fell through. Plus it's tough to deny that this sounds like something she would naturally gravitate to.
