Michael Shannon Takes Villain Role In Guillermo Del Toro's Cold War Romance Film

While there continue to be a lot of questions surrounding Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming supernatural romance, it does appear that an impressive cast is taking shape for it. A few months ago Octavia Spencer and Sally Hawkins came aboard, and just days ago we learned that Richard Jenkins and Michael Stuhlbarg were in talks for what may be titled The Shape of Water. And now there's another reason to be excited for it as Michael Shannon may be signing on for a role.

Shannon, who is fresh off the political comedy Elvis & Nixon, would be taking a villainous role in what is being officially described as "an other-worldly story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. A mysterious and magical journey from master storyteller Guillermo del Toro."  There's a more detailed but totally unconfirmed report that the story involves a romance between an amphibious man and a mute janitor played by Hawkins. Who knows what is accurate at this point, and with Del Toro anything is possible.  It's worth noting that THR's report fails to mention Jenkins at all. Maybe he dropped out or was never attached at all?

The plan is for Del Toro to begin shooting this summer.
