First Look At Christian Bale And Oscar Isaac In 'The Promise'
Any film with Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale at the top of the ticket is going to gain a ton of attention, but so far there has been very little buzz about The Promise. That could change as the historical drama debuts at TIFF next month. Let's be honest, with those two starring even if it's terrible some distributor will want to back it for a potential awards season run.
The first images have arrived for the film directed by Terry George, who has been pretty quiet since 2004's Hotel Rwanda. Set during the final days of the Ottoman Empire, the story follows a love triangle that develops between an American journalist, a medical student, and a beautiful Armenian artist played by Charlotte Le Bon (The Walk). Here's the full synopsis, and expect to start hearing more about this one soon.
Michael, a humble Armenian apothecary, leaves his village to study medicine in cosmopolitan Constantinople. Chris, an American photojournalist who has come to the country to partly cover the geopolitics, is in a relationship with the talented Ana, a Paris-educated, Armenian artist. When Michael meets Ana, their shared heritage sparks an attraction that explodes into a romantic rivalry between the two men. After the Turks join the war on the German side, the Ottoman Empire turns violently against its own ethnic minorities. Despite their conflicts, everyone must find a way to survive — even as monumental events envelope their lives.
