Suddenly things seem to be moving quickly on The Girl in the Spider's Web, a sequel to David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. While we still have no idea if Rooney Mara or Daniel Craig will reprise their roles, last month Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez was said to be top of the list to helm the adaptation, and now in an interview with Comingsoon he has apparently confirmed it.
While they don't provide any quotes, the site says Alvarez has made the news official. He'll be directing The Girl in the Spider's Web, which is the fourth book in the series following the original "Millennium Trilogy". Sony decided against adapting the next two sequels, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, after the first movie didn't live up to expectations. As for 'Spider's Web', it focuses almost entirely on computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and less on journalist Mikael Blomkvist, which doesn't bode well for a Craig return. Speaking with Collider, screenwriter Steven Knight said the movie will be different from its predecessor but doesn't ignore what came before...
“It can’t be anything other than a sequel, but a couple of books have been skipped, so it is different, in that sense. It’s really taking a very strong central character and thinking, how do you execute this? It’s quite different.”

A genius hacker who has always been an outsider. A journalist with a penchant for danger. She is Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo. He is Mikael Blomkvist, crusading editor of Millennium. One night, Blomkvist receives a call from a source who claims to have been given information vital to the United States by a young female hacker. Blomkvist, always on the lookout for a story, reaches out to Salander for help. She, as usual, has plans of her own. Together they are drawn into a ruthless underworld of spies, cybercriminals, and government operatives—some willing to kill to protect their secrets.
Finally, Alvarez revealed that he has plans to direct a sequel to Don't Breathe, with Stephen Lang returning as the Blind Man. At this point nothing has been confirmed, and with Alvarez set to direct an adaptation of Ed Brubaker's comic, Incognito, who knows when it could happen.
