National Board Of Review Names 'Manchester By The Sea' Best Film Of The Year
Just to show the whiplash effect that can come with all of these awards happening one-after-another, the National Board of Review has named Kenneth Lonergan's coastal drama Manchester by the Sea as its Best Film. It also earned Casey Affleck another Best Actor win, one for Best Original Screenplay, and a Breakthrough award for co-star Lucas Hedges. All of this comes a day after it was Barry Jenkins' Moonlight that cleaned up at the Gotham Awards.
That said, Moonlight still performed well. Naomie Harris won for Best Supporting Actress while Jenkins took home Best Director. The film also ended up in the board's top 10 of the year. A couple of other major takeaways include Amy Adams' Best Actress win for Arrival, which is somewhat surprising given the competition; and Jeff Bridges for his supporting turn in popular favorite Hell or High Water.
