Josh Brolin To Lead Amazon Mystery Series 'Outer Range' With Brad Pitt As Producer

The era of prestige TV means it's no longer weird to find the biggest Hollywood stars both producing and starring in projects for the small screen. Case in point: Amazon's upcoming series Outer Range, which will star Josh Brolin and is produced by recent Oscar-winner, Brad Pitt. Damn.

The series places Brolin in the role of Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott, who is struggling to keep his family and life in order, only to come face-to-face with the unknown when something unfathomable turns up on his land.

Playwright Brian Watkins will exec-produce and write the scripts, with Brolin also acting as an exec-producer. This will be Brolin's first TV role since 2013's short-lived political series Mister Sterling. I remember that because it was created by Lawrence O'Donnell and was basically a ripoff of The West Wing.

Next up for the busy Brolin is Denis Villeneuve's anticipated Dune, along with Steven Soderbergh's Kill Switch. [Deadline]

Review: 'Troop Zero', Viola Davis Plays Den Mother In A Familiar Underdog Story

*NOTE: This is a reprint of my review from the 2018 Sundance Film Festival*

I don't know what I was expecting from the quirky underdog story Troop Zero, but this wasn't it. Perhaps I was swayed, like so many probably were, by the presence of Viola Davis and Allison Janney in the cast, along with the film's recent purchase by Amazon. So there are all sorts of acting cred there that suggests something more than just another movie about misfit kids, but that's pretty much all this movie is without much in the way of originality.

While hardly a terrible movie, Troop Zero rarely seems to be dealing with real people, rather cartoon caricatures. The irony is McKenna Grace's space cadet of a protagonist, Christmas Flint (seriously that's her name), who declares herself to the extraterrestrials she's obsessed with, " I'm Christmas Flint. Human female."  Well, yeah, sorta. Set in the southern-fried town of Wimbly, GA in 1977, the film centers on Christmas, who recently lost her mother and now spends her days dreaming about outer space while her loser-lawyer of a father (Jim Gaffigan) struggles to keep her out of trouble. When the town's Birdie scout troop is offered by some NASA rep a chance to be included in a recording being sent up to space, Christmas assembles a squad of outsiders to defeat the prissy troop led by mean ol' Principal Massey (Janney).

Try not to overdose on the saccharine sweetness of this peculiar romp. Christmas' band of weirdos includes her gay, Aretha Franklin lovin' best friend Joseph (Charlie Shotwell), the overly religious and one-eyed Anne-Claire (Bella Higginbotham), bully Hell-No (Milan Ray), and Hell-No’s bruising sidekick, Smash (Johanna Colón).

Adding some much-needed heft and a balance to all that sugar is Davis as Rayleen, the cynical paralegal to Christmas' daddy. She has no interest in hanging around a bunch of kids, but she wouldn't mind getting even with old rival Massey. The film swings unevenly between Christmas' misadventures earning Birdie merit badges and the gritty real-life problems people in this poor town are facing. One moment we're meant to laugh as Anne-Claire vomits while trying to sell cookies, the next Rayleen is lamenting past legal problems, relationship woes, and the direction of her life. At the same time, we're also meant to feel Christmas' grief, recognizing that her need to send a message to outer space is more than just some silly fascination.

The movie's best moments are when directing duo Bert & Bertie, along with Beasts of the Southern Wild co-writer Lucy Alibar, slow things down and get real. Davis and Grace have more than their share of touching scenes as Christmas looks towards the reluctant Rayleen as a surrogate mother figure. Janney is hamming it up in a way similar to her drawlsy performance in Drop Dead Gorgeous, while Gaffigan shows unexpected sensitivity that pays off in the end, following a big concert number resembling something out of Revenge of the Nerds.

Troop Zero will act as comfort food to anyone looking for something cute and well-meaning to digest, but it doesn't say anything that will reverberate very far, and certainly not into the stars.

'The Dark Tower' TV Series Topples At Amazon

Nobody wants to see an adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower succeed, I guess. A couple of years after a failed movie with Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba, the TV series followup has now been rejected by Amazon Studios.

The decision was made by Amazon after viewing the pilot episode, with producers expected to shop the two completed scripts to other outlets. This probably shouldn't be that big of a surprise. Amazon already has the hugely expensive Lord of the Rings series to focus on, and adding King's fantasy epic might have been just a bit too much. It's also possible it just didn't look very good. Considering all that has happened with The Dark Tower over the years, that's got to be a consideration.

For a long time while The Dark Tower was being pursued as a feature film franchise, there was also a TV series component that would provide background or flesh out storylines. That was to be the case with the 2017 movie, as well, but the show changed into a complete reboot when the movie tanked. The story of gunslinger Roland Deschain (reportedly to be played by Sam Strike) and his battle with the evil Man in Black (Jasper Pääkkönen)  would still be followed, albeit at the beginning of his journey.

With so many platforms out there somebody is going to throw a ton of cash to make The Dark Tower happen, and in a way that will make the most of King's epic vision. There's simply too much potential in it becoming the next Game of Thrones-sized hit, and King adaptations are more popular than ever. [Deadline]

Amazon Reveals Full 'Lord Of The Rings' Series Cast, Includes Two 'Game Of Thrones' Alums

Amazon's The Lord of the Rings TV series won't be loaded up with much star power, but then it doesn't really need to be. Most of us had no idea who the Game of Thrones cast were when it started; they became huge stars because of their work on that acclaimed HBO series. Clearly, Amazon is hoping to do the same and they have even recruited some Game of Thrones alums in that goal.

The full cast has been revealed, and it begins with some confirmations of names we had already heard about. Robert Aramayo, who replaced Will Poulter some weeks back, is set to play the series' hero, Beldor. Aramayo is best known for playing young Ned Stark on Game of Thrones. He's joined by Crawl actress Morfydd Clark, who will play the elf royal Galadriel, previously played by Cate Blanchett in Peter Jackson's films. Joseph Mawle (Benjen Stark on Game of Thrones) is believed to be the series' villain, Oren.

Others in the cast include Markella Kavanagh (True History of the Kelly Gang) as the female lead, Tyra; Ema Horvath (The Gallows Act II), Nazanin Boniadi (Bombshell), Tom Budge (Son of a Gun), Ismael Cruz Cordova (Miss Bala), Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, and Daniel Weyman.

I'm sure they're all excellent.

The series will be set long before events in The Fellowship of the Ring, and so far Galadriel is the only returning character. Rumors continue to swirl that others are being kept under wraps. Perhaps there's a young Gandalf in there, somewhere? Sauron for sure, right?

Amazon will debut The Lord of the Rings in 2021.

'Troop Zero' Trailer: Viola Davis And McKenna Grace Take On Allison Janney In Amazon's Camp Comedy

Allison Janney and Viola Davis square off in the new trailer for Troop Zero, a film that debuted earlier this year at Sundance. Amazon Studios quickly picked up the rights and have been holding on to the camp comedy from rising star director duo Bert & Bertie.

While the chance to see screen greats like Janney and Davis go toe-to-toe is always welcome, the film is led Gifted and Captain Marvel star McKenna Grace. She plays the precocious oddball Christmas Flint, who joins other misfits to infiltrate a prissy all-girl troop and send a time capsule into space, which she hopes will help reconnect with her dead mother. Davis plays the tough-as-nails paralegal who leads Christmas' group into a battle of wills against their prim and proper rivals, led by an especially unlikable Janney.

I remember not caring for this one too much, finding it a bit rough around the edges and lacking in enough humor to sustain it. But it's the kind of easily digestible, good-natured movie that should do well on Amazon Prime, where it'll arrive on January 17th 2020.

'Invisible Life' Trailer: Amazon To Release Brazil's Oscar-Contending Drama

The Best Foreign Language Film category at next year's Oscars is shaping up to be extremely competitive. With the French drama Les Miserables very much in the mix, you'd think Amazon Studios wouldn't want to compete against itself, but with the acclaim already heaped upon Karim Aïnouz's Invisible Life it may be unavoidable.

Set in 1950 Rio de Janiero, Invisible Life tells the story of two close sisters who break free from their conservative upbringing to pursue their individual dreams, all while longing to be reunited someday. The film stars Carol Duarte, Julia Stockler, and Fernanda Montenegro.

Brazil has made Invisible Life its official selection in the Best Foreign Language Film category, where it'll face stiff competition. Even if Les Miserables doesn't get selected, one has to think Parasite and Pain & Glory definitely will.

SYNOPSIS: Rio de Janeiro, 1950. Eurídice, 18, and Guida, 20, are two inseparable sisters living at home with their conservative parents. Although immersed in a traditional life, each one nourishes a dream: Eurídice of becoming a renowned pianist, Guida of finding true love. In a dramatic turn, they are separated by their father and forced to live apart. They take control of their separate destinies, while never giving up hope of finding each other. A tropical melodrama from the director of Madame Satã.

Invisible Life opens on December 20th.

The Meta Gets as Deep as the Patriarchal Drama in the Seocnd Trailer for 'Honey Boy' from Amazon Studios

Shia LeBeouf is about to prove he's more then just a crazy Hollywood type with a movie that's not only going to give a deeper look into the life of a child actor but also shed a spotlight on the inner torment and emotional trauma the actor himself had to contend with in his journey to today. While Honey Boy isn't technically an autobiographical tale of the (still) young actors life it's not hard to look between the lines and see how much of this comes from a very real place...right down to the opening shot of the trailer which is an obvious take on LeBeouf's time on a Transformers set. This new trailer really hammers home the "parental" angle of the film, and I use those quotation marks for a very real reason. I'm dying to see how that relationship plays out as it looks like they're going to show a situation where a father is trying to do right by his son but just doesn't have the tools to do so, like most villains a bad parent doesn't always know they're a bad parent and genuinly thinks, at least some of the time, that they're doing the right thing.

I don't think I've ever been really looking forward to a Shia LeBeouf movie, that is of course, until now.

Blumhouse-Amazon Movie 'Nocturne' Casts 'Euphoria' And 'Annabelle 3' Stars As First Details Emerge

Blumhouse is looking to bring their winning streak from the big screen over to television through their 8-picture streaming deal struck with Amazon Studios last year. And now we're learning more about the first movie from Blumhouse TV as part of that deal, titled Nocturne, a supernatural thriller that has already cast a pair of rising stars.

Deadline reports Sydney Sweeney (HBO's Euphoria) and Madison Iseman (Annabelle Comes Home) are set to lead Nocturne, about "an incredibly gifted pianist who makes a Faustian bargain to overtake her older sister at a prestigious institution for classical musicians." Sounds a lot like Netflix's bonkers thriller The Perfection, another horror centered on rival classically-trained musicians.  Also in the cast are Jacques Colimon (The Society) and Ivan Shaw (Casual), with British-Irish filmmaker Zu Quirke making his writing/directing feature debut.

Sweeney recently played one of the Manson girls in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Iseman also played Bethany in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and will be reprising the role for the upcoming sequel.

Further details aren't really necessary given Blumhouse's killer track record. If they're behind it, expect a certain level of genre quality, even if this movie isn't expected to get much of a theatrical run, if any at all.

Jennifer Kent's 'Alice + Freda Forever' Heads To Amazon Studios

Through Jennifer Kent's two films, The Babadook and The Nightingale, she's established herself as a fearless and uncompromising director. That also makes her someone whose movies have never been geared for mainstream audiences, despite their critical acclaim. Fortunately, Kent's next film has found a home with Amazon Studios which will likely prioritize more than just theatrical distribution.

Deadline reports Amazon has picked up Kent's tragic romance, Alice +Freda Forever, with plans to finance and distribute. The film is based on the bestselling non-fiction book by Alexis Coe about a doomed romance between two girls in 1892 Memphis, Tennessee. When their secret love letters are discovered, they are forbidden from seeing one another, an act which has deadly consequences.

One of the things I admire about Kent is her ability to tackle delicate issues, such as race, class, and motherhood, with the necessary care while employing stark visuals that drive the point home. Nobody else out there is making movies with female protagonists like Kent is right now, and I can't wait to see what this partnership with Amazon brings.

Filming is expected to begin next summer.

Amazon Drops Second Trailer for Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling Comedy 'Late Night'

Amazon has been trying for some time now to find their breakout hit and have had some modicum of success with quality films, their ration at least of good to bad has been far better then Netflix's "throw it all at the wall and see what sticks" mentality. One thing about the streaming service films is that they are becoming indistinguishable from theatrical releases, both in quality and content. Late Night which stars Emma Thompson as an aging late night host who brings in a young woman of color, played by Mindy Kaling, to revitalize her show before it gets the axe, is something that a few years back would seem like an indie idea but has become so mainstream that I could easily see this as a Universal release. There's no problem with  that per say, I just hope they take advantage of the platform to says something real, from this trailer it looks like they'll at least be going for a funny and well-rounded view at a lot of the issues surrounding race and gender politics. Emma Thompson is always delightful and Kaling has emerged as one of the premier voices in comedy for today's generation. If the movie delivers what the trailer promises, a high quality feature with a streaming service edge we are all in for a good time.

'The Boys' NSFW Trailer: Karl Urban Takes On The World's Most Depraved Superheroes

With Marvel's Avengers movies more popular than ever, we may be seeing the beginnings of a counter-narrative forming. Who wants to keep watching perfect superheroes deserving of their amazing gifts, when it's so much more interesting to explore those who use their powers for evil?  James Gunn is giving us the Superman-esque Brightburn in the next few weeks, and on the small screen there's The Boys, which follows a super-team of depraved individuals.

From the mind of Preacher creator Garth Ennis, once again teaming up with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, The Boys is known for its extreme violence and sexual deviance. Might be a reason why I read the comic from beginning to end.  Anyway, the series stars Karl Urban as Billy the Butcher, leader of a vigilante team who stand opposed to corrupt celebrity superhero who abuse their powers. Alongside Urban is a fantastic cast that includes Elisabeth Shue, Erin Moriarty, Jessie Usher, Chace Crawford, Laz Alonso, Jack Quaid, Karen Fukuhara, Antony Starr, Jennifer Esposito, and Simon Pegg.

SYNOPSIS: THE BOYS is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and their formidable Vought backing.

'Too Old To Die Young' Trailer: Nicolas Winding Refn Teases His Beautiful And Violent Amazon Series

Oh yeah, this is what Nicolas Winding Refn has been doing. The stylish filmmaker behind Drive, Only God Forgives, and The Neon Demon has been busy with his Amazon event series Too Old to Die Young. It's been a while since we've seen anything from it, but out of nowhere a new trailer is here and man, it's a stunner.

Refn's flair for dramatic visuals energizes the violent and poetic trailer, which features Miles Teller as an anguished Los Angeles cop who, following the accidental shooting of a woman, descends into a criminal underworld of working-class assassins, yakuza, Russian mobsters, Mexican cartels, and teenage killers.

Refn has surrounded Teller with an extraordinary cast that includes Jena Malone, Billy Baldwin, John Hawkes, Nell Tiger Free, Babs Olusanmokun, Callie Hernandez, and Cristina Rodlo. He directed all 10 episodes and co-wrote the script with crime novelist and comic book veteran Ed Brubaker. Amazon will debut Too Old to Die Young on June 14th.

Matthew McConaughey Eyed To Star In Park Chan-wook's Violent Western 'Brigands Of Rattlecreek'

About seven years ago Oldboy director Park Chan-wook was attached to do a Western, which was pretty cool in and of itself. Titled The Brigands of Rattleborge, it featured a script by Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99 writer/director S. Craig Zahler, before he became known for those ultra-violent flicks. The project never went anywhere, but potential like that doesn't just disappear and Amazon has come to its rescue with a few changes.

Newly-titled The Brigands of Rattlecreek, the film has been revived over at Amazon Studios with Chan-wook still on board. But Collider adds that Matthew McConaughey is being sought to star in the story of a local sheriff and a doctor who team up to revenge on outlaws who are using the cover of a torrential rainstorm to terrorize a small town. Assuming the McConaughey deal goes through, another A-list actor will be sought for the other lead.

This is pretty exciting, as it is any time Chan-wook gets behind the camera. Stylistically he's a director who always puts everything out there, as he did with 2016's wild The Handmaiden. He also doesn't make very many movies for American audiences. The last one being 2013's Stoker, and he also had a hand in producing Snowpiercer that same year.

Amazon's 'Lord Of The Rings' Takes Place During "The Second Age"

Despite rumors and popular theory, Amazon's upcoming Lord of the Rings series won't be about the adventures of a young Aragorn. Well, there go all of the casting calls hoping to find someone who could walk in Viggo Mortensen's boots.  Over the last few days Amazon has been teasing news on the series, but today with a tweet captioned "Welcome to the Second Age" the biggest question surrounding it has finally been answered.

Now we know when Amazon's Lord of the Rings will take place, and it's long before Aragorn was even a twinkle in his mother's eye...or her mother's...or her mother's before that. The Second Age was written about by Tolkien but never fully explored, however it's known to have been long before any of the familiar adventures seen in the Fellowship or Hobbit trilogies. It's said to have lasted more than 3400 years and for the most part Tolkien left it unchronicled.

There is one aspect of the Second Age that we might see the series explore. Crucial to it are the Men from the island of Numenor, who were faithful and granted wisdom and life well beyond their years. But they were also jealous and prideful, and became easy targets for the deceptions of Sauron, who had crafted the infamous Rings of Power and the One Ring to rule them all. The Numenorians were deceived into taking on the gods, and Numenor was destroyed utterly, cast into the bottom of the sea. An alliance between elves and faithful Men would later challenge Sauron and defeat him, with the One Ring becoming lost soon after.

The Second Age is vast and has tons of characters from which Amazon could explore for multiple seasons, the better to recoup that $100M+ price tag.

'Hanna' Season One Trailer: A Teen Assassin Goes On The Run

The first episode of Amazon's Hanna TV series is already out there for you to enjoy, but that doesn't mean the marketing machine grinds to a halt. Hell no, as yet another trailer for the show based on Joe Wright's 2011 action-drama has arrived.

While Saoirse Ronan is nowhere to be found this time as she's gone on to much bigger things, the title role has been passed to Esmé Creed-Miles, who once again looks more than up for it. She plays the titular teen raised from birth and trained by her father (Joel Kinnaman) to be a top mercenary. When Hanna and her father go on the run, they're pursued by a rogue CIA agent (Mireille Enos) with an agenda of her own.

Based on this trailer and other footage we've seen, there won't be much of an attempt to veer from the original story. That could change the further along it goes.

The first season of Hanna hits Amazon Prime on March 29th.

'Hanna' Trailer: Joe Wright's Assassin Flick Is Now An Amazon Series

While Joe Wright's filmography is impressive, for me his best film remains Hanna. The arts action-drama starred multi-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan as the titular child assassin, who breaks from her programming and goes on the run from her government handlers. It's one of those films, like Steve McQueen's Widows, that shows what an auteur filmmaker can do to elevate a familiar genre. While the film was far from a hit, it's highly regarded and remains popular, which is why Amazon sought to turn it into a TV series.

The series won't feature the star power of Ronan or her co-stars Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana, but one can hardly complain about the new casting. Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman star, having previously worked together on The Killing, while relatively-unknown actress Esme Creed-Miles takes the title role.  Enos will play the agent sent to track Hanna down, while Kinnaman is the father who raised and trained her to be a killer.

In the newly-released teaser we see a baby Hanna being kidnapped straight out of her crib, otherwise we don't get much else about the plot. Directing the series will be Sarah Adina Smith, best known for the Rami Malek film Buster's Mal Heart, with each episode penned by David Farr.

Hanna hits Amazon in March.

'Cold War' Trailer: Pawel Pawlikowski's Polish Romance Eyes Oscars Gold

Amazon Studios had a lot of high-profile movies in 2018: Beautiful Boy, Don't Worry He Won't Get Far On Foot, and Suspiria just to name a few. All looked like potential Oscar contenders, but none will make the cut. And yet it wasn't a total loss, because there is definitely serious awards buzz for Pawel Pawlikowski's melancholic Polish romance, Cold War, and you can tell by the new trailer.

While the film is open in select theaters now, Amazon is getting word out ahead of its streaming debut. A big winner at Cannes and Poland's official entry for the Academy Awards, Cold War is loosely based on the story of Pawlikowski's parents. The story takes place in post-war Poland, where a man and woman, him a musician and her a troubled singer, are drawn to one another despite their different backgrounds and the tense politics of the time.

Pawlikowski has himself earned acclaim, including the Best Director award at Cannes, while his stars Joanna Kulig and Tomasz Kot are receiving the best reviews of their careers. It's a powerful film, one that shouldn't be missed.

 Here's the synopsis: Cold War is a passionate love story between a man and a woman who meet in the ruins of post-war Poland. With vastly different backgrounds and temperaments, they are fatefully mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in 1950s Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, it’s the tale of a couple separated by politics, character flaws and unfortunate twists of fate — an impossible love story in impossible times.

Will Ferrell And Gus Van Sant Team For Amazon's 'Prince Of Fashion'

When you're Will Ferrell and you want to make a film happen, it usually does. A few months ago Ferrell expressed his desire to work with director Gus Van Sant on a new film, but it was unclear if it was a thing that might actually happen. Well, it is actually happening, and the film will take Ferrell back into the world of high fashion, but no, this isn't another Zoolander sequel.

Ferrell will star in Prince of Fashion for Amazon Studios, which Van Sant will write and direct based on Michael Chabon's GQ article “My Son, the Prince of Fashion." The story centers on Chabon and his son's visit to Paris during Men's Fashion Week, when the teen finds his passion for high fashion, meets his idol, attends multiple runway shows, and learns to find "his people". Ferrell will play the father, of course, although the son has yet to be cast.

Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are on board to produce, having first approached Chabon about adapting the award-nominated article. 

Van Sant is coming off the Joaquin Phoenix drama Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot. Ferrell will be seen later reteaming with John C. Reilly for Holmes & Watson.

'Homecoming' Trailer: Julia Roberts Joins With 'Mr. Robot' Creator For Amazon's Haunting New Series

Julia Roberts has made sporadic appearances in series TV (remember her episode of Law & Order?), but she's never committed to the small screen in any substantial way. Until now, that is, with the anticipated premiere of Homecoming, the new Amazon series from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and based on the popular podcast. The first trailer has arrived and it looks like Roberts has dropped herself into one compelling mystery.

Set at the mysterious Homecoming Transitional Support Center, the series stars Roberts as a caseworker helping soldiers acclimate back to civilian life. But it's clear right away that something weird is going on. Stephan James (Race) plays a soldier eager to return to society, with Shea Whigham, Sissy Spacek, Bobby Cannavale, and many more on hand in supporting roles.

Each episode will be written and directed by Esmail, which explains why the color scheme and shot selection look so much like Mr. Robot.

Amazon will debut Homecoming on November 2nd.

Amazon Shelves Woody Allen's 'A Rainy Day In New York' Indefinitely

Well, it looks like that "break" Woody Allen was going to take will start...oh, right now. As speculated just yesterday, the legendary director's next film, A Rainy Day in New York, has been shelved by Amazon Studios indefinitely. 

This always seemed like the logical scenario, although there remained some chance Amazon would quietly release it later this year. The film has been under heavy scrutiny of late since past allegations of sexual abuse have resurfaced to hound the director. As usual, the cast for this was great with Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, and more on board, but some who were involved have come to regret working with Allen. Chalamet, Hall, Gomez and co-star Griffin Newman have each spoken out against him and donated their salaries to Time's Up. 

The backlash has been devastating, and recent reports are that Allen is unable to find backing for any further projects, not to mention that actors are hesitant to work with him. The overall deal he struck with Amazon has proven to be less than benficial, as well. So far it's produced the dreadful series Crisis in Six Scenes and last year's disappointing drama Wonder Wheel, and clearly Amazon has decided the time is now to cut their losses and move on.
