When we were getting ready to watch “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” we saw previews for an anime series that I had never heard of called “The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye.” My daughter immediately started saying that she wanted to see it, so I added it to my Netflix queue.
The anime is about a girl named Honoka, who is known as the “Sword Dancer” due to her skills and grace while using her sword. She is living on Earth where over 80% of the population has been annihilated in a great war. The remaining people are ruled by a race known as “The Third.” They possess a third red eye on their foreheads. Honoka has a blue eye, which makes her an outcast by normal humans and The Third.
The first couple of episodes were a little boring. I think it’s usually a normal thing that happens because that is when they are trying to build up the plot and layout the background, so we can understand the rest of the series. It was very reminiscent of Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind – the large bugs, the main character, and the Earth’s deterioration.
After the first episodes, the series is getting more and more interesting. We are in the middle of the series, and we, especially the kids, can’t get enough of it. They love the characters and the action-packed scenes. Even when there are scenes where we are exploring the characters in more depths, we are not filled with boredom. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
I can’t imagine it going downhill because it keeps getting progressively better. I will definitely keep watching and will update to let you know how it turned out.
