He's strong to the finish, because he's made out of CGI. Sony has revealed that they are working to bring a big screen version of Popeye, the big muscled spinach eating sailor from cartoons and comic strips, to theaters in 3-D. Producer Avi Arad(Spider-Man) is on board, with former Variety writer Mike Jones on tap to script the project.
The expected cast of characters will all be involved. Popeye's flighty, rail-thin girlfriend Olive Oyl; his arch nemesis Bluto; and his adopted kid Swee'Pea.
Popeye was last scene on the big screen in the 1980 live-action film directed by Robert Altman and starring Robin Williams.
I used to love Popeye as a kid, but now I'm wondering just how well something like this will play to audiences. It'll be interesting to see what elements make the transition, such as Olive Oyl's often humiliating treatment of Popeye(she was sortof a bitch). What tone will they shoot for? Popeye cartoons ran the gamut of simple love triangle disputes(Olive Oyl was sortof a ho, too), to battles with sea hags and space aliens.
