Rant Time: 3-D
Okay Hollywood....I gave you time to play with your shiny new toy but time's up. At first I didn't pay it much mind, it seems like every 20 years or so there's another fad rush for 3D as seen in the '50's and 80's so I thought you'd shoot out a couple gimmicky movies, make some extra dough and we'd all move on . I'm starting to think this isn't the case and wondering if you're starting to believe you're own hype with this new "RealD" technology you're using. Let me set you straight before you get too far ahead of yourself....It's nothing special. As a matter of fact the effect you get from the new tech is actually not as pronounced as what the old red and blue glasses gave you. At least with those it seemed like stuff was coming out of the screen, this new 3D just gives it slight depth so you feel like you're watching a play in a fish tank. Seriously stop taking yourself so seriously with it, old school 3D was a gimmick and it knew it was. The glasses looked stupid and the film used cheap jump out effects to take advantage of the third dimension, but at least it knew it was a gimmick and played up to that. You seem to think this new shit is art, that it really adds something to the film viewing expeirence. Well you got me there it certainly does add somethings, namely a headache and eye strain....and for only 4 bucks more a ticket! Wow thanks Hollywood! Next time you want to rape me can you at least take me to dinner first? In addition the damn sunglasses that they tried to make look cool only make it darker and take away from the clarity of the film. Speaking of which who did they hire to design their new "cool" sunglasses? F'in Buddy Holly? Seriously I feel like I should be reading poetry in Starbucks when I put those damn things on. John, you say, why don't you just go to the 2D movie....we offer both versions. Yeah you do, but conveniently the 2D versions seem to be playing at odd times and are generally only in one theater. Coincidence that the one they can't tack on money for is harder to get to? I think not. Now, seeing the inflated box office numbers for 'Avatar' you've tasted the blood in the water and are on the hunt for our hard earned money, converting EVERY upcoming major release to 3D. The real bitch of that is that there REALLY won't be any benefit to the 3D as the movies are just being converted to 3D, they weren't shot for it. I'm looking at you 'Clash of the Titans'. Until you come up with an actual way to enhance the viewing experience just leave us with our classic, boring old 2D. Instead of spending all of this money on a technology that leaves your audience physically ill how about looking into those rumble seats they have in some LA theaters, or even better invest that money in finding NEW creative story ideas for your films. If it's really about the theater experience how about focusing on IMAX, an upgrade I actually don't mind paying for. Now THAT is enhancing the cinematic feel, clearing up the picture instead of making it harder to see and actually making the audio better at the same time. I've wasted enough time on this subject so I'll finish this up by saying that if I never see another movie advertised as 'IN 3D' it'll be too soon. This is John Nolan signing off. F You 3D, I'm OUT!
