For the third week in a row, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's adaptation of the Lewis Caroll classic holds strong at the top, and now ranks as Burton's highest grossing film yet, surpassing Batman
2. Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Proving to be more of a box office bully than a 90 lb. weakling, Diary opened to a larger than expected opening weekend thanks to a marketing campaign that artfully co-opted the look and feel of the popular series of novels. It doesn't hurt that with the exception of Alice in Wonderland there's very little kid-friendly material out this time of year.
3. The Bounty Hunter
While $21M is nothing to sneeze at, consider that this is the smallest romantic comedy debut weekend for both of the film's leads, Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston, in the last few years. Both scored higher weekends with The Ugly Truth
4. Repo Men
Repo Men got cut out of the top 3 after a pretty soft opening weekend, thanks to a poor marketing campaign that seemed to have trouble nailing down the film's dark comedy tone. Unable to highlight the film's plot, two repo men who cut artificial organs out of delinquent customers, instead they focused on the sci-fi future aspect, which did not distinguish it in any way.
5. She's Out of My League
How crazy is this? She's Out of My League, which has been savaged by critics but reasonably well-regarded by fans(like yours truly) beat out Green Zone in it's second week, only dropping a mere 38%. I'm happy to see this well made, likable comedy reaching some level of success.
6. Green Zone
Bourne done in by Jay Baruchel.
7. Shutter Island
8. Avatar
9. Our Family Wedding- $3.8M/$13.7M
10. Remember Me
At this point, Robert Pattinson's other projects not titled Twilight or Harry Potter have made about 1/10000th of their total gross. Just sayin'.
