Deptford is a depiction of the life of Elizabethan era playwright, Christopher Marlowe, who led a secretive, closeted life and was killed under mysterious circumstances.Riley would be playing Marlowe, with the story presenting the popular modern belief that he was a spy hired hired by Queen Elizabeth to infiltrate the Catholic insurgency. Marlowe's life has become a popular topic amongst conspiracy theorists, with some claiming that he was actually William Shakespeare working under an assumed name.
