I've been waiting for Sam Riley to hit the big time ever since his mesmerizing performance as Ian Curtis in 2007's Control. He really hasn't done squat since, but it's looking like he could be making a splash in the coming months. The project I'm most interested in is A Dead Man in Deptford, based on the novel by late author, Anthony Burgess. Deptford is a depiction of the life of Elizabethan era playwright, Christopher Marlowe, who led a secretive, closeted life and was killed under mysterious circumstances.
Riley would be playing Marlowe, with the story presenting the popular modern belief that he was a spy hired hired by Queen Elizabeth to infiltrate the Catholic insurgency. Marlowe's life has become a popular topic amongst conspiracy theorists, with some claiming that he was actually William Shakespeare working under an assumed name.
The film will be directed by Nick Copus(The 4400), with Ray Winstone(The Departed) and James Purefoy(Vanity Fair) co-starring.
