Mark Wahlberg possibly to star in Broken City; Allen Hughes to direct?

I generally like Mark Wahlberg in almost anything he does. Sure, he can be a bit whiny(see him in The Happening. Yeesh), but he cuts an imposing combination of brawn and comedic timing few can match. I point to his turn in The Other Guys as a shining example of that. Now it looks like he could be throwing his hat in the action ring once again with the film, Broken City.

The script for Broken City, penned by Brian Tucker, was on the Black List, Hollywood's round up of the best unproduced screenplays floating around. The story involves a disgraced cop, presumably played by Wahlberg, who turns private detective and is hired by the Mayor to investigate his wife's presumed extramarital affairs. Here's what Wahlberg told MTV on the project...

There’s this other thing, ‘Broken City,’ that I want to do… at the end of next year with Allen Hughes directing. It’s on the Black List. It’s one of the best unproduced screenplays… It’s an amazing piece of material that should attract amazing talents. Hopefully we’ll get that thing together.

He sure makes it sound as if Allen Hughes already has the job locked down. Allen usually works alongside his brother, Albert, but with the live-action Akira project the two seem to be headed down different paths. Albert is directing that flick, with Allen supposedly off helming HBO's Gentlemen of Leisure series. So it's very possible that Allen could have the time to slot this major production into his schedule.
