Now here's a flick that promises to be the feel good event of the year. Robert Redford's The Conspirator, which features a rather sour looking Robin Wright as Mary Surratt, the first woman ever to be be executed by the United States government. Why would they do such a thing? Because she was convicted of conspiracy in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Whether or not she actually was involved has been a matter of debate(the evidence has always sounded flimsy to me, but it's too late now!). Even the signing of her death warrant is up in the air!
Redford has managed an impressive, surprisingly young cast for this historical piece, including James McAvoy as Surratt's lawyer, Alexis Bledel, Justin Long(!?), Evan Rachel Wood, Tom Wilkinson, and Kevin Kline. Debuting at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, it was met with mixed reviews. A major release is set for later this year, possibly in September. If I have to choose, I think I'd rather see Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
