Trailer Time: Melancholia, directed by Lars Von Trier

Don't be fooled by the opening trailer for Lars Von Trier's latest film, Melancholia. It might look like a dressed up story of wedding day squabbling amongst an eccentric family, but it's much more than that. When has Von Trier ever done anything simple? Melancholia is really a story about people dealing with Earth's impending destruction at the hands of a fallen planet. Yep, it's a disaster flick, but clearly unlike any one we've likely ever seen.  Check out the trailer for Melancholia below, followed by a couple of quick comments...

There are a handful of directors that I know will always make stuff that challenges the audience. PT Anderson, Malick, Tarantino, and Von Trier. Most people couldnt' stomach Antichrist, which I understand, but I found it to be an absolute rush of emotions. All of his movies are like that, even the not so good ones. Melancholia looks like it's going to be much the same, from the dramatic score to the recurring shots of fear and anguish. I'm loving this already.

Another thing that draws me to this is the continued emergence of Kirsten Dunst as a dramatic actress. I was surprised as anyone when Von Trier sought her out for this film, because on the surface she doesn't appear to fit into his mold. Dunst proved she can do top notch work in last year's All Good Things. I'm betting she's even better here. Von Trier wouldn't stand for anything less than perfection from any of the remarkable cast he's put together:  Charlotte Gainsbourg, Charlotte Rampling, Kiefer Sutherland, Brady Corbet, Alexander and Stellan Skarsgard, John Hurt. Amazing.

The film will be released in Denmark next month, but no firm US date has been established by Magnolia Pictures, who will be handling the distribution.
