Eric Bana to play Elvis Presley in Cary Elwes' directorial debut
For his directorial debut, Cary Elwes(The Princess Bride) has decided to focus on two people who have a long history of having flicks made about them, but never of them together. The film is Elvis & Nixon, centered on a Dec. 21st 1970 meeting between Elvis Presley and then President Richard Nixon. What'd they talk about? Probably not fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
Meeting at the White House at Presley's request, the rocker suggested he be made a Federal Agent-at-Large in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Dude wanted to be a NARC, and to help sweeten the offer he brought "Tricky Dick" a 45 pistol as a personal gift.
Joey and Hanala Sagal co-wrote the script with Elwes, with the latter also serving as exec producer. Considering the numerous interpretations of both men on screen, casting would go a long way in determining the film's tone. THR reports that Eric Bana(Munich) is set to play Presley, while Danny Huston(The Proposition) is in final talks for Nixon.
Personally ive never seen a portrayal of Elvis that I've dug. But I thought Frank Langella was masterful as the Prez in Frost/Nixon. The only one better? Dan Hedaya in the Kirsten Dunst/Michelle Williams comedy, Dick. Brilliant.
