Trailer Time: Hugo, directed by Martin Scorsese
I was genuinely excited after the first trailer premiered for Martin Scorsese's kid-friendly adventure film, Hugo, because it looked like the type of old school yarn we don't get to see very often anymore. Playing to a surprise audience at this year's New York Film Festival, response has been fairly positive, with it being called a genuinely heartwarming fairy tale. Good deal, sign me up. Let's get November 23rd here already.
However, this latest trailer is pretty bland, and lacks the scope of the original. The 3D, which should be played up considering how the director's never used it before, is basically an afterthought. The sense of wonder is just flat and muted here.
To recap, Hugo is based on The Invention of Hugo Cabret by author Brian Selznick, and starrs Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Jude Law, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, and Sacha Baron Cohen. The story follows an orphaned boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station, until he meets an eccentric girl who helps him solve a mystery connecting his recently deceased father, a mysterious toymaker, and a heart shaped lock without a key.
