Star Trek 2 will open in May 2013, and of course it's in 3D

JJ Abrams had his fun making us all, including Paramount, wait for his decision to come back and direct the sequel to Star Trek. The original plan had the much anticipated film docking in theaters in June of next year, but the delay while Abrams indulged in other pursuits caused for a total change in tactics. Eventually he did give his thumbs up, and at last report production was set to kick off in January, with all of the cast set to reprise their roles. Now we for sure that the Star Trek 2(or whatever it'll be called) will open on May 17th 2013, but there's a bit of a catch.

One of the hanging issues between Abrams and Paramount was their desire to have the film be in 3D, which Abrams was clearly against. It appears the studio has won out, as Deadline also reports it'll be released using the format, although whether it'll be during filming or added in post-production is unclear. Knowing Abrams, I would assume the former, but since one of his gripes was that he didn't want it to affect his film making style perhaps the latter would be more appropriate. The first film made more than enough money and satisfied old school fans while pulling in tons of new viewers, so the thought of Abrams not having earned enough cred to make the film how he wants is crazy to me.

Now the question is how soon can they get Benicio Del Toro locked in to play the villain?
