F. Gary Gray out, Anthony Mandler in to direct 'The Last Days of American Crime'
Last may we learned about that F. Gary Gray was set to take on the directing reins on The Last Days of American Crime, based on the great comic book series by Rick Remender. The film seemed to be developing nicely, with Sam Worthington and Noomi Rapace attached, and a premise that puts a nice little twist on the typical heist genre. Then we stopped hearing about it.
It appears we know the reason why, as it appears to be back at square one. Deadline reports that music video director Anthony Mandler is now in the hot seat, with Gray apparently having dropped out somewhere along the way. This will be Mandler's features debut, having built his career directing videos for Jay-Z, Rihanna, and many others. Vlad, that Dracula pic written by Charlie Hunnam(Undeclared) and produced by Brad Pitt, is another project he's attached to.
The Last Days of American Crime takes place in a future when the United States government is looking to end all unlawful acts by using a form of mind control on the entire populace. A career criminal named Graham Brick decides now is the perfect time to commit the ultimate robbery and skip the country, making it possibly the last such crime in history.
It's unclear whether Worthington or Rapace are still involved, but it's doubtful. Doesn't this sound like something Andrew Niccol(Gattaca, In Time) could have a field day with?
