While we may all mock the topsy turvy recent career of Nicolas Cage, it's important to remember that his real life has had it's share of off-the-wall moments as well. Beyond just the buying up of castles and spending himself into so much debt the IRS was practically in his back pocket, one particularly crazy episode had Cage's super rare Action Comics #1 stolen from him back in 2000. For those who don't speak nerd, that was the first official appearance of Superman, worth in the millions of dollars.
Well the creators of Reno 911!, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, think this sounds like an awesome idea for a movie, and I wholeheartedly agree. So does Lionsgate, who have picked up the rights to the film, titled Action Comics #1. Unfortunately, we won't get the opportunity to see Cage try to play himself, although the part was initially written for him. Jason Statham's name has surfaced, but it doesn't appear he's involved at this time. I'd kill to see that, too! People may not get it, but to guys like me, Action Comics #1 is like the friggin' Mona Lisa, and this story was a HUGE deal when it happened. Seeing it made into a feature film, even a totally fictional version of it, gives me the chills it's so cool.
The comic was missing for more than a decade, finally discovered in an abandoned storage locker in 2011. Fortunately it didn't turn up on Storage Wars because somebody would've bought it for $200 and made one hell of a profit. Cage ultimately sold it at an auction for $2.1M last November, which I hope put his financial woes to rest.[THR]
