Melissa Leo joins Tom Cruise in 'Oblivion'

Melissa Leo has made the most of her opportunities ever since catching everyone's eye with Frozen River, following that up a couple of years later with a Best Supporting Actress win for The Fighter. She's come a long way since she was one of my favorite characters on Homicide: Life on the Street. Although ever since her big win(and the cuss-laden acceptance speech), she's mostly been in smaller roles like in Conviction and Kevin Smith's Red State.  She's got a couple of big mainstream flicks on the way, though, and the latest sees her taking a stab at science fiction for really the first time in her career.

Deadline reports Leo will join Tom Cruise in the promising sci-fi film, Oblivion, from Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. Taking place in a future earth where the planet has been destroyed by alien invaders, and the remaining humans living above the clouds. Cruise plays a drone repairman on the planet's surface who discovers a mysterious woman who changes his perspective on everything. Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau co-star, although Leo's role is still unclear.

The third season of HBO's New Orleans set series, Treme, is filming right now so you can expect to see Leo return for that.
