Kristen Stewart to produce and star in 'Cali'

Remember the last time one of those Twilight jokers tried their hand at an action movie? Yeah, it was Taylor Lautner in Abduction, and it didn't turn out so well. Robert Pattinson is sorta taking a stab it it with David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, and now Kristen Stewart has her own genre flick to headline.

Variety reports that Stewart will produce and star in Cali, a small budget action film with a script by Michael Diliberti, writer of last year's "meh" summer comedy, 30 Minutes or Less. Stewart will play Mya, who along with her boyfriend Chris, make up a San Fernando Valley couple with a penchant for making some really bad choices. After selling a fake snuff film, they hit the road with a ton of cash, only to be forced to return years later to save the younger sister she left behind. To do it, they'll have to survive everybody they screwed over before, including homicidal porn stars, stoner vet techs, and a killing machine in a cowboy hat. As you might expect, this puts a strain on Mya and Chris's relationship.

No director has been found yet, but with production set to begin this summer that should be wrapped up shortly. As much as people knock Stewart for that vapid tween franchise she's been burdened with all these years, she's proven to be a very good actress when given the right material, leaning more towards indie dramas when her schedule opens up. She was excellent in The Yellow Handkerchief and Welcome to the Rileys, and will next be seen in Walter Salles's adaptation of On the Road. Frankly, Cali sounds like it may be terrible, and I can see a bunch of random quirky characters popping up and nothing really making any sense.  So now the question is who will play Chris? Is it too much to hope she'll re-team with Eddie Redmayne? Or maybe somebody with a bigger profile?
